Moving

Moving

Monday, August 9. 2004 9:10 p.m.
Kyle has given me the task of journaling our move. I will begin at the beginning.

Wednesday August 4. Our realtor's assistant,Kathie, e-mailed us a house that I really liked in the afternoon and I asked if we could see it on Friday. She called and said that she would be out of town, but could show it to us that evening. We (Me and my four) loaded up and met Kyle in the Price Cutter parking lot and drove to the house. We met Kathie there at 6 p.m., left the older three in the van listening to a tape and toured the home with John. I loved it immediately. It is not my dream house, but it is too, if that makes any sense. It just felt like home. It was clean, well cared for and very interesting.
A quick description:
Cape Cod style (my dad compared it to a barn--grrr)
1 1/2 stories
Three bedrooms and one bath upstairs (no master bath)
All wood floors, except kitchen. I think they are pine.
One possible bedroom (no closet) downstairs, that will be used as an office/school room.
Formal dining room (aka formal playroom)
Large eat-in kitchen with a brick floor.
Large living room with wood (not paneling) walls with a set of build in shelves and large brick fireplace
The kitchen and living room are open, which will be a nice change for entertaining. (Well, it would be nice if and when we entertain!)
Laundry room
Bathroom with shower downstairs off of the kitchen.
Attached garage
Large storage building
1 1/2 acres divided well between open, treed and woods

More in the house later...

Thursday, August 5. We met at the realtor's office and made an offer and signed a contract. Two hours later, they called and wanted to add an addendum to the contract to allow the seller an extra two weeks to move. So, we had a flurry of faxes going, then finally, it was final! The house is ours, barring any unforseen catastrophes found in the home inspection, which is set for Thursday, the 12th.
Our closing date is Wednesday, September 22.

Friday, August 6. I rented a storage unit not far from our house to store various stuff, much of which we will want at some point in the future and unfortunately, some of which we won't. I have always said that when we moved I was not going to be like so many people we have known that take years to unpack all of the boxes, are never able to park in their garage, etc. Well...we have temporarily, I hope, joined the ranks. I just want it out of here and I don't have the time or desire to sort know. We plan to open one box a night and celebrate the new year with a box-burning bonfire!

Saturday, August 7. We all worked like crazy, Kyle and the big boys outside, me in the playroom and Rachel and John did well entertaining each other.
Kyle took the back two bench seats out of our van and loaded it to take to the storage unit, but was unable to get in the security gate. I think he was pushing #, instead of *. Let's just say, he was a little frustrated. So he unloaded the van, which trashed our garage and put one seat back in so I could get to church with John. Kyle and the older three go to Sunday School, John naps and I have an hour to myself.

Sunday, August 8. A day of rest. Our neighbor called and offered us the use of an older truck that they don't drive much. His wife told him about our van/storage shed fiasco and he felt sorry for us!
I did a little sorting in the playroom while the boys played with the hose and washed the van and car and Kyle played with Rachel and John.

Monday, August 9. Kyle took the van to work and brought home some nice boxes for the move. He then loaded it with packed boxes and stopped by the storage unit on his way home.
He came home a little early and we packed the van again and our neighbor's truck and made a trip together. It reminded me of the Beverly Hillbillys!
Kyle took Adam to Sam's for an eye exam at 5:30. I have noticed him squinting when trying to see or read something from a distance for several weeks and I held up a book I wanted to pack this afternoon and he couldn't read the title. So...some good news, the doctor didn't think he needed glasses unless he needed to read a chalkboard. Another positive for homeschooling!
He said Adam would definitely need glasses if he were driving. He did ask if he rode his bike a lot. For now, I think we'll let it go and see how he does. It's always something!
Kyle cut all three boys' hair this evening, gave baths to the younger ones and then mowed, all that after going to work at 5:30 a.m.!
He has been working a lot the last few weeks trying to wrap up a wireless security project. Hopefully, it will slow down soon.
Well, this isn't getting any packing done. Tomorrow is Grand Oak Mission day. The van is loaded with things to donate and I hope to add a little to it before I go to bed.
